Despite having its two primary offensive weapons out due to injuries
(quarterback Alan Olsen due to an Achilles tendon injury,
and running back Jason Smith due to a broken ankle), the
Saint James replacements were more than able to fill the
gaps and the defense again shone as the Trojans racked up
their largest victory ever over the Calera Eagles by
defeating them at Carlisle Field 41 - 6.
Craig Bowman, replacing Olsen, rushed for
touchdowns of 2 and 7 yards, and tossed a 2 yard touchdown
pass to Rick Fidel. The two second quarter touchdowns
were direct results of Eagle miscures, a muffed punt snap
and a lost fumble. Lucas Harris, replacing Smith, also
rushed for a pair of touchdowns of five and ten yards.
Speed McDonald broke open a long run in the fourth quarter
for a 68 yard touchdown, one of the longer scoring runs in
Saint James history.
Jermaine Baez scored the lone touchdown for
Calera on an 11 yard run in the third quarter after Saint James had already built up a 35 - 0
lead. B.J. Nevitt, who had scored a touchdown against
the Trojans the previous year, had two long touchdown runs
called back by penalties. The
first run was wiped out by a clipping infraction. The
second run, a 65 yarder, was wiped out by an illegal shift
penalty. Nevitt did manage 69 yards on 18
carries. Eagle quarterback John Vinson played the
entire game, despite suffering a severely sprained ankle
during the first quarter.
