Herring
scored three first half touchdowns, and added a two point
conversion run and a second half touchdown pass as well as the
Trojans tuned up for the playoffs with a season-ending 30 - 0
shutout of the crosstown Saint Jude Pirates. The defense
shone as well, with repeated drops of the quarterback in the
backfield helping to compile a minus 50 yard rushing effort, with
only 24 yards of passing output which offset.
Saint Jude elected to receive instead of taking the distinct wind
advantage in the first quarter. After returning the kickoff
to the 35, the Trojan defense held the Pirates to seven yards on
three plays, but a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Pirates
good field position at the Trojan 43. However, after a short run,
a sack, and an incomplete pass, the wind came into play as a snap
to the punter went well over his head and the ball bounced and
rolled all the way to the Pirate 22 before being downed.
From there, Herring carried twice, for 4 and 18 yards, for the
first Trojan touchdown of the game. The extra point attempt
was shanked wide, but Saint James was up early 6 - 0.
The Trojans kickoff coverage improved on its next effort, and
after three plays the Pirates got off their punt, although it only
traveled five yards past the line of scrimmage. After a
penalty and two short runs, Saint James quarterback Rob Cole went
back to pass but was sacked and injured, not to return to the game
as a precautionary measure. Therefore, Herring was called in
on future drives to run the offense directly from the quarterback
position. The Trojan punt was deflected out of bounds, and
Saint Jude began to move the ball on short passes and defensive
penalties. An offensive fumble recovery after a pass
reception gave Saint Jude first down at the Trojan 27, and by the
first play of the second quarter, with the wind now at their
backs, the Pirates were at the Trojan 21. Saint Jude went
for broke, but the pass was intercepted by Will Webber just short
of the endzone and returned to the Trojan 35. From there,
Herring, Mark Berry, and Jason Smith moved the ball exclusively on
the ground. On the eighth play of the 65 yard drive, Herring
called his own number from the 14 for his second touchdown.
His two point running attempt failed, but Saint James had scored
on both of its possessions and led 12 - 0.
An into the wind kickoff and a good return gave the Pirates fine
field position before a holding call pushed them back.
Later, a defensive pass interference call gave the Pirates a
chance to score from the Trojan 28. However, three plays
lost a total of five yards and on fourth down, the wind carried a
pass yards over an open receiver, turning the ball over.
After a two yard loss on first down, Herring swept off left end,
broke into the secondary, and outraced both opponents and the
headwind for a 69 yard touchdown run, a career long for him.
He had enough breath to convert the two point run as well, and the
Trojans were up by 20 late in the first half.
A squib kickoff to offset the wind pushed the Pirates back, and
they could not convert a first down, but they did not allow the
Trojans time to set up for another scoring chance as the halftime
siren wailed. As the second half began, Herring was
preparing to test out some short pass routes, as at the time the
status of regular quarterback Rob Cole for the following week was
unknown. Webber returned the kickoff to the Trojan 48.
No luck on the early passes, but several runs by Berry and Smith,
and a key face mask call, gave the Trojans first and goal at the
Saint Jude 9. On second down, Berry carried in from the 10,
but a clipping penalty negated the touchdown. On fourth down
from the five, Berry could only get as close as the one and the
Trojans turned the ball over. However, on the first Pirate
offensive play of the half, Mark Lawrence burst through the line
and tackled the Pirate back in the endzone just as he claimed hold
of the football, giving the Trojans a safety and another immediate
possession.
Despite the wind advantage, which strengthened during halftime,
Saint Jude tried a pooch kickoff that was downed by Saint James at
the Pirate 43. From there, Smith and Herring alternated runs
for 18 yards, before Herring tried another short pass, finding Jay
Robertson open in the flat, and he rushed to the endzone 25 yards
for what would be the final touchdown of the game. Berry was
rewarded with the conversion run giving Saint James a comfortable
30 - 0 lead late in the third quarter.
With a now-running clock, suggested by the shivering referees and
boisterously approved by both teams, the Pirates benefited from a
late hit on the kickoff return, but Webber picked off his second
pass of the game and returned it 22 yards to the Trojan 42.
Webber was the receiver of the final pass completion by Saint
James on the next play of the game for another 22 yards, and then
Herring finished off his 142 yard rushing performance with an 11
yard carry on the final play of the third quarter.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, All-State lineman Bo
Wills was lined up in the backfield for his first, and only career
carry, which lost 4 yards. An incomplete pass on fourth down
several plays later meant the end of the game for the starting
skill players. With both teams ready to call it a night -
the clock continued running, even through changes of possession,
which were no more than four plays long in the fourth quarter for
either side. Finally, the siren sounded and the Trojans
began looking forward to the playoffs the following week with a
long trip northwestward to Lamar County ahead.
