Trinity turned three Saint James turnovers into
touchdowns in the second quarter to break open a somewhat
close game as the Wildcats raced to a 41 - 0 rout of the
undermanned Trojans.
Saint James' best offensive possession of the game
was their first. The Trojans gained 39 on that
possession and just barely over that much the remainder of the
contest. Chris McEwen caught a third down pass from
Steve Barton for a first down at the Trojan 37. Four
plays later, a roughing the kicker penalty gave Saint James
possession in Trinity territory - the only time they would be
so fortunate all evening. Three runs netted nine yards,
and on fourth down the Wildcats stopped Barton on a
quarterback sneak for no gain.
The Wildcats drove 73 yards for the first score of
the game. Bain Chapman ran and Pat Moody passed Trinity
down the field. A defensive offside penalty led to a key
first down. On third and five from the Trojan ten,
Chapman got the call and enough yardage for the
touchdown. Bubba Skipworth kicked the first of five
extra points for a 7 - 0 Trinity lead late in the first
quarter.
The Trojans had a quick first down after Turnipseed
runs of seven and nine yards. However, on the next play
David McClinton intercepted the first of five passes on the
night for Trinity at midfield. Yet on this drive the
Saint James defense held and forced a punt on the final play
of the first quarter. After two incomplete passes, Brent
Cherry stepped in front of a Barton pass, intercepted it, and
ran unchallenged into the endzone for a 31 yard score.
Skipworth's kick doubled the Wildcat lead to 14.
Saint James continued their giving ways by fumbling
on the ensuing kickoff, with Trinity recovering at the Trojan
23. Trinity overcame their own bobbled snap on first
down, and two plays later Chapman scored his second touchdown
from 23 yards out; the extra point giving Trinity a 21 - 0
lead still early in the second quarter.
A fine kickoff return by Andy Roberson gave Saint
James a first down at their own 47, but another fumble on
first down after a quarterback change returned the ball to the
Wildcats yet once more. Trinity drove as close as the
Trojan 11 in three plays, but a Wildcat fumble gave Saint
James a temporary break deep in their own territory. Two
consecutive quarterback runs by Craig Hill of 10 and 12 yards
moved the ball out to the 34, but one play later, McClinton
picked off his second pass of the evening and returned it 50
yards to the Trojan 29, where another 15 yards was tacked on
due to a late hit penalty. Bain Chapman scored on the
next play from 14 yards out and Trinity had a commanding 28 -
0 lead as halftime approached.
Trinity got one more chance to add to their first
half lead after a punt, but a clipping penalty on a long
return and a Tray Ivey interception on the next play stopped
any further Wildcat threat.
Saint James, desperate to get some momentum, tried
an onside kick to start the second half, but the Wildcats were
expecting such and recovered on the Trojan 47. Trinity
overcame another clipping penalty on their first play from
scrimmage, and several plays later quarterback Pat Moody
lofted a pass to a wide open Mark Kolen for a 26 yard
touchdown and a 35 - 0 lead early in the third quarter.
The Trojans failed to convert a first down and
punted again, leaving Trinity only 53 yards to travel for a
touchdown, which they did. Moody called his own number
from 15 yards out. Skipworth shanked the extra point,
but the Wildcats were up comfortably by 41 and began inserting
numerous substitutions.
With a running clock for the remainder of the game,
Saint James never seriously threatened to score. In the
fourth quarter, the Trojans stopped Trinity on downs at the
Saint James 28, and later Trinity stopped themselves, running
down the clock within 10 yards of the Trojan endzone as time
expired. The Wildcats then celebrated their sixth
consecutive win over their cross town rivals.
