Demetrius Coleman was
a one-man wrecking crew for the first time opponent
Beauregard, as he opened the game with a kickoff return for a
touchdown, and later added a rushing touchdown and a long
interception return to his resume as the 4A Hornets disposed
of the outmanned Trojans at Carlisle Field, 41 - 14.
Maurice Black's kick
after the return gave the Hornets a 7 - 0 lead merely 15
seconds into the game. The Trojans moved the ball on
their opening drive, with double-digit yardage first down runs
by Stephan Delahay and a pair by Robert Enslen. However,
the drive stalled and Saint James punted into the Hornet end
zone. Neither team could get much going in the first
quarter. A sustained Beauregard drive was stopped by a
Delahay interception on fourth down at the Trojan 12.
Two plays later, however, Saint James returned the favor with
their own intercepted toss, and the Hornets were back in
possession at the Trojan 47.
A ten-play drive
followed, nine on the ground, wrapped up by Luther Crawford's
two yard touchdown run with 2½ minutes to go in the
first half. But the scoring was not finished for the
second quarter. A short kickoff return, a sack, and an
incomplete pass left the Trojans with a third and fifteen at
their own 25. From there, Wade Hartley rared back and
found an open Gabe Harris about 20 yards downfield. Two
defensive pursuers ran into each other, leaving Harris with a
clear run to the end zone and a Saint James touchdown.
With Harris exhausted from his extended jaunt, the Trojans
opted for a two point conversion. Amidst Hornet
confusion, Hartley found Delahay in the flat for the
conversion pass and suddenly the Trojans were down by only 6
with 66 seconds remaining in the first half.
To add to the
excitement, Saint James executed and recovered a beautiful
onside kick at the Beauregard 49 to possibly threaten
again. However, a holding penalty on first down pushed
the ball back into Trojan territory, and an interception on
third down ended the scoring threat and all scoring for the
first half.
Saint James converted
one first down on their opening third quarter drive but could
go no further. The Hornets took over on their own 38 and
took up most of the third quarter on a cumbersome 12 play
drive, 11 of those on the ground. Demetrius Coleman
carried on two key plays, a 15 yard run to the Trojan 9, and
two plays later on a touchdown from 1 yard out. The
Hornets matched the Trojans' two point conversion with a
conversion run of their own, and the lead was back up to 14
late in the third quarter.
The Trojans were
quickly in Hornet territory after two consecutive major
distance penalties. From the Beauregard 39, an illegal
procedure penalty and three incompletions left the Trojans
with a fourth and 15. Hartley completed a screen pass to
Jeff George, who wound through the mostly deep covering
Hornets for 24 yards and a first down. A late hit moved
the ball down to the 10 yard line, and a defensive offside on
first down gave the Trojans an excellent shot at a score from
the five. However, the Trojans fumbled on the next play,
and the Hornets quickly retaliated with a 5 play 92 yard
drive. The final 41 yards were traversed on the opening
play of the final quarter. The kick failed, but
Beauregard was up 28 - 8 with less than a quarter remaining.
Saint James picked up
one first down, but a trick play had disastrous results.
A halfback pass attempt by Delahay was deflected right into
the arms of Coleman at his own 48 and he sped unthreatened 52
yards into the Trojan end zone for a quick Hornet
touchdown. Despite another failed kick, the Beauregard
lead was still a sizable 26.
Hartley, who averaged
nearly 30 yards a completion in this game, tossed a 55 yarder
to Delahay, similar to the Harris touchdown pass, which
carried the Trojans down to the Beauregard 12. This
time, the Trojans would not be denied as two plays later they
duplicated the earlier two point pass play with Delahay
scoring on the touchdown reception. A second
conversion pass aimed at Billy Byrd fell incomplete, and the
score was 34 - 14 with just over half of the final quarter
remaining.
With the Hornets
lined up to defend an onside kick, Saint James opted for the
squib kick which was fallen on by a Beauregard upman at their
own 34. The Hornets overcame several big penalties with
long runs, and scored eight plays and four minutes later from
the Trojan one. Black's extra point would be the final
score of the game, at 41 - 14.
The Trojans went
backwards on their final drive, thanks to a sack, a run loss,
and a bad punt snap, but the Hornets merely ran out the clock
on their last two plays as they finished off their road
victory.
