September 11, 1987 Marbury
Stadium. Game conditions: Rain
(otherwise n/y/a)
The Saint James
Trojans and the Marbury Bulldogs battled for three and a half
quarters before each team converted a final quarter field
goal. However, Marbury's Danny Webb scored a touchdown on
the second play of the first overtime period giving the Bulldogs
a 9 - 3 victory over the visiting Trojans, who were playing in
their second consecutive overtime game.
The game
featured rain throughout, and late in the first half some of the
stadium lights actually blew out due to a rain-caused short
circuit. The referees and local administration determined
there was enough lighting, barely, to continue play.
Neither team
could generate significant offense in the first three quarters,
but finally Scott Connell connected on a 24 yard field goal,
basically the same length as an extra point, midway through the
fourth quarter to give Marbury a 3 - 0 lead. Saint James
took over at their own 35 and began a fifteen play drive.
A ten yard run by Jay Allen and a costly face mask penalty kept
the drive alive. Saint James drove as close as the Marbury
ten before a penalty pushed them back five yards. On
fourth down, Gavin Finklea converted a tying field goal late in
the game from 32 yards to force eventual overtime.
For the second
week in a row, the Trojans failed to win the toss and was
relegated to playing defense second. Saint James only
gained several yards on its overtime possession, and a field
goal attempt failed. The Marbury possession required only
two plays, consecutive runs by Webb. The second down play
was originally called from the sidelines to be a quarterback
keeper, but an audible led to the winning touchdown call which
concluded the game with the Bulldogs taking the hard-earned
victory.
