Mark Kitchens
scored three touchdowns in a turnover-filled game as the
Trojans shut out their second consecutive city rival; this
time the Catholic Knights were the 28 - 0 victim. The
teams combined for five turnovers on the first five drives on
the way to a miserably sloppy start. The fifth turnover,
an interception of Catholic, was returned deep into Knight
territory, setting up the first Trojan touchdown, Kitchens'
one yard run.
Catholic returned
the ensuing kickoff to the Trojan 48, and appeared to have
connected on a 48 yard touchdown pass on the next play, but an
illegal formation penalty wiped out the touchdown, which
proved to be the only serious scoring threat of the entire
game by Catholic. A total of three interceptions thrown
and two fumbles lost by the Knights indeed proved costly.
Kitchens added two
touchdown runs of one and thirteen yards in the third quarter
as Saint James pulled away, and Jody Dunning added an
insurance touchdown as the reserves earned a chance to score
against their Vaughn Road neighbor in the final minutes.
