Quarterback Jeff
Stevenson only carried twice in this game, but both rushes
went the distance for touchdowns. A four yarder in the
first half and a 78 yarder on the first scrimmage play of the
second half were part of Trojans' 198 yards rushing, and a
punt return touchdown by Johnny Redding helped lead Saint
James on its way to a 24 - 7 defeat of the visiting Houston
Academy Raiders. Gavin Finklea added three of three
extra points and a 29 yard field goal as well.
A key 15 yard run
by fullback Tommy Aplin set up the first touchdown by
Stevenson two plays later. The short field goal drive
began after the ball was snapped over the Raider punter's
head. The Raiders lone touchdown, a 17 yard pass towards
the end of the first half, benefited from a peculiar, but
accurate officials' call. Saint James was flagged for
unsportsmanlike conduct during a called timeout when head
coach Mike Roberts walked out to his defensive huddle and did
not remember to remove his headgear.
Charles Sylvest was
directly responsible for setting up each of the final two
Trojan touchdowns, as he made the key "devastating" block to
break Redding open for the punt return touchdown, and he made
the block which broke open the hole for Stevenson to cruise 78
yards for his touchdown to begin the third quarter.
After this game,
Saint James was ranked # 4 in the state in the revised 1A
classification. This was the highest state-wide rating
to date for any Trojan football team.
