September 21, 1984.  Boykin Field.  Game conditions:  not yet available

For the first time in six attempts, the Trojans finally broke the Wildcat jinx, defeating Trinity at their home stadium in great part to two blocked kicks, 14 - 13.

The game, scheduled for a conventional start at 7:30 PM, did not start until 10:00 PM because, thanks to a "clerical error" at the management level, no crew of officials was either scheduled for or dispatched to the game.  The same officiating crew which called the Catholic / Alabama Christian game across town was rushed over by police escort following the completion of their game to Boykin Field.

Each team scored early.  Bubba O'Gwynn, for the second straight year against Saint James, scored early on an eight yard touchdown run for the Wildcats giving them a 7 - 0 lead.  Less than a minute later, Johnny Redding broke through for a 79 yard touchdown run and Andy Johnson's kick tied the score.  Several drives afterwards, Gene McNeely scored for Trinity, but the extra point was blocked by three onrushing Trojans.

On Trinity's first offensive drive of the third quarter, Redding picked up a loose ball at the Trojan 34 yard line and returned it down the Trinity sideline for a touchdown.  Andy Johnson's kick was true, and the Trojans led by a single point.  Neither team could get much moving on offense until the end of the game, when Trinity drove as far as the Trojan eleven yard line.  However, Tommy Aplin became an all-time Trojan hero as he blocked a 28 yard potentially game-winning field goal attempt by Mike Dawson, and Saint James ran out the clock to preserve their first ever victory over the rival Wildcats, as midnight neared.
