1976.
Saint James took advantage of an unfortunate injury to the Lowndes
County kicker early in the game. In an obvious punting
situation deep in Red Devil territory in the fourth quarter,
Lowndes County opted for the intentional safety which still gave
them a four point advantage with just over three minutes remaining
in the game. After the ensuing free kick, the Trojans drove
down the entire length of the field for the winning touchdown pass
from Robert Kelly to Freddie Brown with only 30 seconds remaining
on the clock. Lowndes County's Harry Simmons had run 72
yards for an apparent touchdown on the first scrimmage play of the
game, but it was called back on a penalty - one of the Devil receivers
had lined up offsides. The Devils did score later in the
first quarter on a five yard touchdown pass from Raymond Davison
to Derrick Dozier, but failed to threaten afterwards in a
season-opening defensive struggle.
