In the first meeting between these two teams at their co-built
and co-owned stadium, which was officially dedicated at
halftime, Steve Durden scored two touchdowns to lead Catholic to
the victory. The Knights outgained the Trojans by 346 to
87 yards, and 265 to 51 in rushing. The Trojans actually
netted negative rushing yards on all plays except for one carry
by Danny Dean, a 68 yard run to the Knights three yard line.
However, a personal foul penalty on the following play
negated a touchdown and eventually ended Saint James' only
serious scoring threat of the game. The loss also
virtually eliminated the Trojans' chances of a playoff berth in
their first year of Alabama High School Athletic Association
competition, despite a 3 - 0 area record prior to this contest.
