For the first time in the history of the Capital City Conference, all 10 soccer teams earned a berth in the state playoffs.
That made the 2023 season a competitive one and a successful one, with three teams reaching the championship round.
The boys’ all-conference team includes players from four teams that lost in the first round of the playoffs and one that reached the finals.
Montgomery Academy (20-3-1) opened the season with a pair of losses, then didn’t lose again until a 4-3 setback in the Class 6A championship game. The Eagles made their fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament but their first trip to the championship round since losing to Trinity in 2004. The Capital City Conference coaches selected first-year Montgomery Academy coach Matheus Mello as the CCC Coach of the Year.
Selecting a player of
the year in a talented conference was a bit more
difficult but the coaches settled on Montgomery
Academy senior Lucas Rizzo. Rizzo, a UAB signee, was
a standout for the Eagles as an eighth grader and
freshmen, but spent the next two years at MLS
Academy in Columbus, Ohio, before returning to the
school this season. As a senior, Rizzo had 53 goals
and 15 assists to lead the Eagles to the finals.
