St. James managed only sixteen points from
the field and sixteen from the freethrow line in one of their
lowest offensive outputs ever as the homestanding Trinity Wildcats made shot
after shot when a change
in momentum was anticipated, and claimed third place in the 2003 Capital
City Conference Holiday
Basketball Tournament with a 54-32 win. The game was particularly sloppy
and slow-paced, with Trinity
committing 21 fouls (to St. James' 12), but the Wildcat defense was stifling.
Jordan Kirkland was top man
for the Trojans, making two field goals and going 7 for 7 from the free throw
line. St. James trailed by 16
at halftime, but could never get closer than 14 points in the second half.
All-Tournament team member
Taylor Nelson was held to six points, all in the first half. Trinity's
All-Tournament representative, Tommy
Trott, led all first half scorers with 8 and all game scorers with 12.

The Lanier Lady Poet defense tightened up in the second half, allowing only
five made field goals and no
freethrow attempts while holding the Trojans to two points in the last quarter
as they scored 11 and came
from behind to win the Girls' 2003 Capital City Conference Basketball Tournament
with a 48-40 victory.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Michelle Cottrell hit a three point bucket
to start the fourth quarter and
give the Poets a lead they would not relinquish. Each team got off
to a fast start connecting on a trio of three
pointers each in the first quarter. There would be only three more
the entire game. Lisa Bright had 5 field
goals within the free throw lane and two freethrows before leaving the game
early. The Trojan tandem of
Barnes and Richards, who were both named to the All-Tournament Team, were
held to one field goal
combined in the second half. Cottrell and All-Tournament Team member
Harriet Burton each hit two three
pointers, and were joined on the Tournament Team by Ebony Jones of Lanier.
