St. James avenged a home tournament defeat to their area foe Beauregard
in a tight game as the Lady Trojans held off
a last second shot attempt to defeat the Lady Hornets by 3, 63-60, in
the semifinals of the 2004 4A Area 5 Tournament.
St. James did not lose a lead the entire first three quarters, with the
score only being tied at 0, 7, and 9, and led by as
much as 13 when Elizabeth Richards drained a 3 pointer to start the
third quarter. However, Beauregard scored 14 of
the next 16 points and cut the lead to 36-35. However, Hillary
Barnes scored 11 of her team high 20 points in the final
four minutes of the third quarter, and the lead was back to 9 at
46-37. The Lady Hornets went on another run, of 13
straight points, with a Brooke Jackson basket giving Beauregard its
first lead of the game at 47-46 with 5:34 remaining
in the game. Ashley Baker added her only basket of the game, but
a Barnes 3 pointer tied the game at 49. St. James
held the lead until 70 seconds to play when Jackson hit a 3 pointer to
tie the game at 57. Catherine Cowart drilled a line
drive shot on the next possession, and after a missed shot, Katie Smith
added two freethrows to give the Trojans a 61-57
lead. However, on the next Hornet possession, Tiambra Dinkins
capped off her game high 28 points with a basket and
foul shot, a three point play the old way, to cut the lead to 61-60
with 10 seconds remaining. St. James got the ball in
to Barnes, who was promptly fouled and nailed both her
freethrows. Beauregard had a last chance to tie, but a three
pointer was slightly deflected and neither team could gain possession
of the ball in the final few seconds as the clock
expired. St. James moves on to play #1 seed Brewbaker Tech, who
narrowly avoided a major upset by defeating the
#4 seed Handley Lady Tigers by a mere bucket, 58-56, in the last few
seconds.
