St. James clinched another area championship as
they defeated the Tallassee Tigers at
Southside Field, 5-0. The story of the game was the Trojan
pitching, as Adam Mills and
Ted Brewer teamed up for a two hit shutout. Tallassee never got a
runner as far as third
base, and 4 of the 6 Tiger runners who reached base were eliminated by
fielding plays.
C.J. Shaw's sacrifice fly in the first inning after a dropped fly ball
gave the Trojans an early
unearned run. In the third inning, Jason Soriano doubled, Bruce
Alter singled, and Guy
Martin drove in Soriano with a sacrifice fly. Shaw then doubled
in Alter for the second run.
Soriano drove in Tyler Henry, who had singled, with a groundout in the
top of the sixth, and
Taylor Thompson hit a mammoth homerun into the right center field trees
in the seventh.
Adam Mills pitched 5 shutout innings for the win, and Ted Brewer
pitched two innings,
striking out three, to preserve the victory and capture the area
championship yet again.

The Trojans held off a furious rally by the
Tigers in the second game, boosted by a sixth
inning putout at the plate, and scored twice in the top of the seventh
to garner an 11-9 victory
in the second doubleheader game. C.J. Shaw had 5 RBIs in the
first two innings, with a
2 run double in the first and a massive 3 run homerun to left in the
second, just two batters
after Guy Martin had singled in two runners of his own. The
Trojans added two more runs
in the fourth as Martin was hit, Taylor Thompson and Shaw both
singled. Martin scored on
a peculiar fielders choice play, and Ted Brewer knocked in a run with a
sacrifice fly to give the
Trojans a seemingly safe 9-2 lead. Tallassee had scored single
runs in the first and third
innings, both on wild pitches. The Tigers scored four in the
fourth. Chris Allen doubled in a
run, Nick Betts drove in a run on a groundout, and Cody Eckstein drove
in a run on a sacrifice
fly. Singles by C.J. Ledbetter and Andrew Schmitt, a walk by Ryan
Peaden, and another wild
pitch plated the sixth run. Ledbetter's bases loaded walk in the
fifth plated an unearned run,
and Allen's bases-loaded single drove home two more. However,
Drew Gunn, playing his first
game in over a month, fielded an excellent relay throw and tagged out
the potential go-ahead
run at the plate on the play, keeping the score tied at 9. St.
James scored two in the seventh to
clinch the victory, as Martin and Shaw each had RBI singles off of
Allen, who was credited with
the unfortunate last inning loss. Ethan Whittington, who came in
for relief in the fourth inning,
picked up the win as he was the pitcher of record at the end of the
sixth. Jason Soriano pitched
an inning of relief for the save and the doubleheader sweep.
